BRS is built on a foundation of mutual care in which we share one another’s joys and sorrows and accompany one another through our life journeys. One of the greatest joys of Jewish life is to live as part of a caring community – one that supports us when we are falling, and shares our joys in happy times. BRS is a place of care:led by a dedicated people. Ours is a community in which we care for one another through illness, bereavement, and the many challenges of life – providing practical and emotional support – meals, transport, company, and a listening ear for those who need. To care is built into the fabric of everything we do. BRS is also a place of great joy: home to over Mitzvahs all the year round, baby blessings, weddings, anniversaries, special birthdays. Our celebrations are more special for being shared with community.
Births
When a baby is born the whole congregation celebrates! We can help you choose a Hebrew name for your child and arrange a special baby naming ceremony to take place during one of the Shabbat services at which your child will be named and blessed.
Please email to discuss how you would like to celebrate the birth or your new baby with your community.
We can also supply the name of mohalim for the purposes of brit milah (circumcision). Please call 020 8455 6763 so that we can give you the details.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah
At BRS we value the journey of each of our children as they prepare to become Bar or Bat Mitzvah. We work closely with the family and the B’nei Mitzvah to prepare them to embrace their responsibilities for our Jewish traditions and the community.Throughout this journey, our rabbis, cantor, tutors and teachers guide and support our students to ensure that their learning will be based upon their individual needs, and that they will be proud of becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah.
When your child is in School Year 5 you will be invited to an information meeting in October or November. During this meeting, details of the journey that you and your child will take toward Bar or Bat Mitzvah will be fully explained in addition to you being given a provisional Shabbat date for the ceremony – this provisional date is based upon your child’s Hebrew birthday.
The learning for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah begins 5 terms before the date of the ceremony and attendance is required at our Friday night Ruach programme and at the one to one lessons, which will start approximately 7 months beforehand.Click here to find out about the Ruach programme.
If you have any questions about the B’nei Mitzvah process please contact
Marriage
At BRS we love nothing more than to celebrate with two people who choose to marry. A wedding symbolises the hopes, dreams and aspirations for the couple. Whether the wedding is for two Jews, a Jew and a non-Jew, heterosexual or same-sex couples, the Clergy and Marriage Secretary are available to be a part of the journey.
A member of the Clergy will work closely with you to make your day special and personal to you. The Director of Welfare & Life Cycle will take you through all the legalities needed prior to the big day.
When booking the venue for your chuppah you may like to considering using Alyth and its various rooms. Email Sarah or call 020 8457 8787, she will be happy to help you with the possibilities.
Marriage Course
We recognise the joys and the challenges that come along with the milestone of marriage. This 5 session course with Lynette and the Alyth clergy will help couples to navigate this special time. Sessions include: The Wedding Ceremony & Customs, Judaism in Your Home, Communicating as a Married Couple.
Please email Lynette or call on 020 8457 8793 for more information.
Aufruf
Aufruf is a Yiddish word which means “calling up”. It is customary to call a couple who are about to celebrate their wedding to the bimah for an aliyah (reciting the blessings before and after the Torah is read). The aufruf is normally on the Shabbat prior to their wedding. After the aliyah, the rabbi or cantor recites a blesses the couple.
